POLL RESULTS: Eighty percent of Minnesota voters say the cost of homes is a problem

Neighbors for More Neighbors and the Yes to Homes! coalition is releasing new polling results today (see document below) that show significant concern among Minnesota voters for the cost of homes and the availability of homes. Eighty percent of Minnesota voters say the cost of renting or buying a home is a somewhat or very significant problem, and two thirds (67%) of voters say there are not enough homes for average people to rent or buy. Minnesota voters also strongly support the policies proposed by the Yes to Homes! coalition this session.

“Twice as many Minnesota voters want the Legislature to take action to allow more homes than want to preserve the power cities have over housing,” said Anna Nelson, Board Chair, Neighbors for More Neighbors. “The results are clear: Minnesotans are tired of seeing family and friends move further away from their communities and jobs to find a home they can afford. We must allow more home options to be built across Minnesota.”

The poll shows strong support for more home options, all of which are included in the Yes to Homes! bill package currently advancing through the Legislature:

  • 68% of Minnesotans support allowing accessory dwelling units, or ADUs;
  • 68% of Minnesotans support allowing duplexes, triplexes, townhomes, and fourplexes;
  • 82% of Minnesotans support allowing homes near businesses and shopping, and 78% support allowing homes near shopping centers, light rail, or bus stops;
  • 74% of Minnesotans support allowing smaller homes on smaller lots; and
  • 63% of Minnesotans support allowing property owners to determine how much parking is needed on their lot.

“Minnesotans are saying very clearly that they need more homes, of different sizes and at different prices, closer to jobs, communities, and family” said Andrea Riehl, volunteer with Neighbors for More Neighbors. “When eight in ten of our neighbors say the cost of home is a problem, the Legislature has a broad mandate to pass the Yes to Homes! coalition bills to create more homes average Minnesotans can afford.”

The poll, conducted by YouGov at the request of Neighbors for More Neighbors, surveyed 800 Minnesota voters between February 28 and March 6, 2025. Neighbors for More Neighbors and the Yes for Homes coalition urges the Legislature to pass these bills and allow more homes to be built.
