Your Monthly N4MN Update ⛄ January 2026 ⛄

Letter from the N4MN Board & Staff
|
Hello neighbors,
The last six weeks have been increasingly challenging for many people in our communities, with the increase of ICE agents in Minnesota causing serious disruption, violence, and psychological harm for many individuals across the state. We are outraged and grieving the killing of Renee Nicole Good and the violence against many of us and our neighbors.
Neighbors for More Neighbors works to ensure the Twin Cities and Greater Minnesota are a place where everyone has a stable, humane place to live in the neighborhood they choose. We organize to create complete neighborhoods that are hubs of people and energy, creating the community that people need to thrive.
Current ICE operations in Minnesota are in direct opposition to this vision and these values. Please know that we are paying close attention to current conditions and are committed to supporting our community during this time.
Below are several resources we’ve gathered. Nothing is too small, and everything matters:

📣 ACTION ALERT 📣 Evict ICE, Not Us
|
With federal agents in our streets, workers can’t safely go to work and earn rent. We need an eviction moratorium now.
No worker should have to choose between keeping a roof over their head and risking being kidnapped by ICE on the way to work. An eviction moratorium is a renter protection that prohibits the removal of tenants from their homes.
Right now, Governor Walz is the only person with the power to pass an eviction moratorium and should do so immediately. Without an eviction moratorium, thousands of vulnerable families are facing eviction as soon as February 1st. People around the country are looking to Minneapolis to see what we will do to support our immigrant neighbors in the face of ICE attacks. Let’s show them how it’s done.
Here’s what you can do:

New analysis of apartment units and single-family rental home prices nationwide shows that average monthly rents are rising in the Midwest. Minnesota saw the second-highest monthly rent increase at 5.74%.
Neighbors for More Neighbors, as part of the Yes to Homes coalition, is working to pass sensible zoning reforms at the State Capitol in 2026 and reverse this trend.
Sign the Yes to Homes petition to let lawmakers know this isn't sustainable and that we, as a state, need to make it easier to build homes that Minnesotans can afford.

A common misconception is that new luxury apartments and housing will increase rents in the areas where they are built.
Data show that new building openings instead decrease rents as wealthier tenants trade up, forcing landlords to lower prices for older apartments and homes.

Looking for some good news in the housing space? In 2025, the city of Edmonton increased the number of missing middle homes, permitting a record number of homes and a record proportion near LRT stations.
This is a testament to the power of zoning reform to drive equitable and sustainable growth, and an example we should follow here in Minnesota.
