Commit to Caucus on Tuesday, February 3rd!
Hey Neighbor,
Are you passionate about making Minnesota a better place for all our neighbors and seeing more homes in your neighborhood? Looking for a way to build political power to make change? One of the best things you can do is get involved in local party activities and get to know your neighbors who are involved in electing our leaders!
Precinct caucuses are happening across the state tomorrow night, February 3rd, at 7 PM for all political parties. Caucusing and becoming a delegate this Tuesday is an important opportunity to use your voice to urge our political candidates to lead on the issues that most affect Minnesotans. We also encourage you to bring forward a resolution at your local precinct caucus supporting Land Value Tax as an option for cities and help collect signatures to support our Yes to Homes legislation.

STEP 2: Submit a pro-Land Value Tax Resolution at your Precinct Caucus

What happens at a precinct caucus?
|
At a precinct caucus, you and your neighbors will have a chance to speak with candidates, participate in a preferential ballot, compose resolutions, and have an opportunity to commit to be a delegate, aka a person who votes on who will receive the party nomination.
Being a delegate should be a primary goal in attending the caucus. If selected to be a delegate, you’ll then attend your local and then statewide conventions later in the year to cast your vote. It’s actually SUPER easy! Party endorsement is a huge first step towards being elected. The people we elect will have a strong voice in local and statewide housing & land use policy.
|
At a precinct caucus, you can present an issue or idea for the party to support, called a resolution. If you convince other attendees to support your resolution, it will be taken to the next political convention. Eventually, your resolution could become part of the official party platform. Unsure what resolutions to bring forward? We recommend checking out the resolutions supported by our friends at The Sierra Club and the LVT resolution below.

Why does Land Value Tax need a resolution?
|
A land value tax (LVT) is a different approach to property tax. Rather than taxing buildings or improvements to a piece of land, the tax is primarily on the land itself. This doesn’t change how much a city raises in property tax, just how it is calculated for the owners.
Land value taxes remove the incentive to hold onto empty lots, encouraging landowners to build homes or businesses on the vacant land or sell it to someone who will. This change in the tax structure promotes thriving communities and discourages real estate speculation.
The problem? It is currently illegal for cities to implement a land value tax. Our resolution simply supports the passage of statewide legislation that allows cities to decide whether an LVT is best for them.
Convinced? Download, print, and bring the resolution with you on caucus night.
|
Is there anything else I can do to support More Neighbors on caucus night?
|
Yes! If you are looking to get even more involved, you can help us gather petition signatures from neighbors in support of the upcoming Yes to Homes bill to help solve our statewide shortage of homes. Just print out and bring this sign-on sheet to your caucus and talk to your neighbors.
