HJL Letter of Support for Eviction Moratorium 2026
Dear Governor Walz,
We, the undersigned Organizations of Housing Justice League and like-minded groups, are writing to demand that you show what it looks like to lead with courage and pass an eviction moratorium immediately! We are on the front lines, facing a public health and civic crisis of the highest order. Our state leaders must protect all Minnesotans from the unconstitutional, violent actions of federal immigration forces. You hold the power to enable our neighbors and loved ones to shelter in place without fear of displacement via eviction. How many more people must be ripped from our communities before action is taken? We know the time to act is now.
Minnesota residents, particularly Black and brown communities, are facing an impossible choice; seek refuge at home or risk abduction for the sake of paying rent. People are terrified to go to work. They’re missing doctors' appointments. Families are keeping their children home from school. Something as simple as going to the grocery store feels insurmountable in the face of the daily, indiscriminate profiling and violence being inflicted on the people of our state. From Minneapolis to Burnsville, Jordan to Duluth, to Mankato and beyond, this reality is hitting all of us, not just the urban core.
Our communities are mobilizing. Neighbors are protecting one another, sharing resources, and building networks of care. But the community cannot fix everything on its own. Mutual aid cannot replace the authority, reach, and responsibility of the government. We know you’re facing unbelievable pressure, but we need your help. We are all scared, and we all need to do this scared. We're up against a federal force that has discarded the Constitution and now attempts to do the same to our neighbors. We’re losing Minnesotans to a lawless system of violence that took the lives of Renee Nichole Good, Alex Pretti, and Victor Manuel Díaz, as well as the indiscriminate use of warfare tactics. We need the full powers of your office to meet the scale of this emergency.
That is why we are calling on you, in your powers as the executive of Minnesota, to declare a state of emergency and pass an eviction moratorium, only to be lifted after ICE has been forced out of our state. As the first of the month approaches, this is the best immediate tool, coupled with increased emergency rental assistance, to stave off the displacement crisis that is emerging from this federal occupation. It is the quickest and most concrete way to ensure our housing courts don’t force our neighbors out into the hands of immigration enforcers, hell-bent on the brutalization of our people.
Sincerely,
Housing Justice League
