Your Monthly N4MN Update 🌼 May 2026 🌼
|
The 2026 Legislative Session is coming to an end, and it has been a mixed bag in making progress on Minnesota's 100,000-home shortage. A full session recap will be coming after the session officially closes on May 18th. So stay tuned for more information. In the meantime, check out our policy tracker to see the items we are watching in the final days of this session.
At the city level, Minneapolis has taken some positive steps in supporting renters, passing an additional $2 million in rental assistance. Unfortunately, two efforts to extend eviction pre-filing notices from 30 days to 60 days and from 30 days to 45 days were both vetoed by the mayor.
The need is urgent, with eviction filings ahead of 2025's record pace through April. The state legislature still has time to assist renters, and is considering $40 million in emergency rental assistance in the housing omnibus bill. Contact your legislator and tell them to support this effort.

🎬 Take Action: Volunteer Leader Opportunity 🎬
|
Neighbors for More Neighbors is gearing up for the next phase of our listening tour to connect with communities across the state, including Eagan, Brooklyn Park, and Northfield, and we’re looking for leaders who want to step in and help shape and support this work.
We’re building a small group to lead on strategy, outreach, and relationship-building in these communities. You'll help ensure we’re connecting with the right people, showing up thoughtfully, and grounding this work in ways that align with residents and leaders on the ground.
If you’re interested in playing a leadership role (or want to learn more), we’d love to have you join us.
Volunteer responsibilities may include:
- Researching community connections
- Having 1:1's with community leaders
- Supporting listening and engagement events with specific leaders and communities
Contact Angela at angela@moreneighbors.org for more information or to volunteer.

"Housing markets do not stop at city boundaries... The consequences of inaction are regional, and the solutions must be as well."
Read this great op-ed from Habitat for Humanity leaders across MN on how the Starter Homes Act is part of the solution to our home shortage.
|
In case you missed it, Lakeville passed a moratorium on new housing in response to the Starter Homes Act.
"The owner of a local lumber company said small-time builders worry the moratorium could bruise business.
A woman representing St. Paul area real estate agents predicted the pause will constrain supply and increase the cost of homes."
